Premier League Preview Week 5 (Top 7 teams only)

Liverpool vs Burnley 9/16/2017

Liverpool host Burnley after the heavy defeat at the hands of Manchester City and a draw at home against Sevilla in the Champions League. Coutinho made his debut for the season in the draw versus Sevilla off the bench in a very disappointing game, Liverpool had a missed penalty and were 100% the better side, they just were unable to convert at the end of the night. Going into this without Mane, they will want a response and expect one, I think a comfortable home win is on the cards.

Watford vs Manchester City 9/16/2017

Not sure why I am even talking about this game, City have been one of the power teams in Europe this week, 5-0 versus Liverpool, and a 4-0 away win in the champions league rounds off a solid week for the Citizens. Expect a win, expect a big win. Aguero and Jesus. Lethal.

Spurs vs Swansea 9/16/2017

Spurs finally have their home win, and it was a statement win. The Lillywhites got their first home win of the season, and more importantly at Wembley against Dortmund in the Champions League. Considering they are in the group of death, those 3 points are worth their weight in gold. A win against the inconsistent swans, 2 home wins and suddenly the Wembley blues will go away. Kane is back in form and expect him to score a goal again. Spurs to win.

Chelsea vs Arsenal 9/17/2017

Easily the game of the weekend, we see Chelsea host the Gunners, Chelsea smashed Qarab in the Champions League while Arsenal’s result is unknown to me as I type this article on a Thursday morning. Arsenal come into this game on swinging form. Should be a fun game to watch for everyone but don’t expect much from Arsenal. Chelsea are on form right now and expect a decent performance by the blues. A Chelsea win is on the cards.

Manchester United vs Everton 9/17/2017

United welcome home a United Legend, a drunk driver and a divorce lawyers’ future client, Wayne Rooney. Unfortunately for Rooney, it doesn’t look like Everton can play decent football right now. United had a comfortable champions league win, though they did see Pogba limp off with injury. Everton have a Europa League tie, but again, I don’t know the result just yet. Should be a simple home win, and expect it to be an interesting tie. In EPL history, Man Utd have 33 wins against Everton, only trumped by United’s 34 versus Aston Villa being a better record. A long list of players face their former club in this match, Lukaku, Fellaini, Rooney, Schneiderlin and Micheal Keane to name a few. Expect a home win.

EPL Weekend Round Up August 27th

Chelsea vs Everton

Chelsea 2 – 0 Everton

Chelsea started the game with Cesc Fabregas returning from suspension while Everton started with Sandro Ramirez and Sigurdsson leading the lines. Chelsea had a solid game with goals from Morata and Fabregas. Morata in the process became the first Premier League player to get a goal and an assist in his first 2 home games as a new signing.

A decent outing by the Blues while Everton struggled, maybe they do not have the depth to cope with the EPL and Europa League? They need to do better while Conte has claimed that they may still make a few signings.

Man of The Match

Morata had a goal and assist in his second game at the Bridge and was fantastic.

Next up

Chelsea are away to Leicester while Everton host Spurs.

Liverpool vs Arsenal (Watched by NAFB)

Liverpool 4 – 0 Arsenal

alexis pointing.jpg

Liverpool made a surprising change with Karius coming in for Mignolet, Klopp claiming he was resting the big Belgian. Alexis came in for Lacazette who was dropped to bench, could this be an audition for Alexis as he still hasn’t signed a new contract at Arsenal. Holding returns in defense while Mustafi is on the bench as rumors of his exit still circle. The teams walk out to You’ll Never Walk Alone, the Kop are in full voice. Sevilla, Maribor and Spartak Moscova are going to get this during those special Anfield nights.

Liverpool have all the momentum early in this game, Salah has too much pace for the Kop defense to handle. Can has been running the show in midfield for Liverpool and he isn’t afraid to take risks and that could be the difference. Speaking of Can he makes a lovely run into the box to Cech’s right, crosses it in and Salah can’t beat Cech who makes an amazing save. The Arsenal defense are struggling here, Liverpool keep coming back at them. Alexis looks like the most lively Gunner out there, running down all the defenders. Arsenal are lucky to be level right now. Fantastic tackle by Holding to ensure Mane doesn’t get away and to ensure he doesn’t give away a penalty. Can again involved, makes a good tackle to deny Alexis a run into the box. There it is, Firmino gets a headed goal for the Kop, Liverpool have look the better side and finally they get rewarded in the 17th minute. Fantastic ball in by right back Gomez. Firmino’s first home goal in the EPL since he last scored against Arsenal in March. Wenger needs to do something here or Liverpool could score a few more here. Great work by Henderson, nicks the ball of Ozil and plays a quick 1-2, gets away a shot on goal but cannot do anything with it. Karius gets a pass back and tries to play it but Welbeck is quick to him, ball bounces away to a Liverpool defender to the relief of Karius. Arsenal’s best chances have come through Welbeck who is about to get booked for a foul on Moreno. Yellow. It was late but the foul was caused by Moreno’s foot following through his kick. Unfortunate for Welbeck. Gomez goes in the book now for a foul on Aaron Ramsey. Arsenal need more defensive support from their wing backs, too much room for Liverpool’s pacey wingers. Salah puts the ball in the net but he’s offside, doesn’t count. Good finish though. Arsenal are really poor right now, doesn’t look like there is a loud voice in the back line to lead this Arsenal defense. Salah beats the back line again and he’s offside again, Arsenal are testing their luck here. Welbeck ruins a good run of play for Arsenal by shoving Matip to the ground, the former Manchester United man needs to be careful, he is on a yellow card. A beauty for Mane, the same can be said regarding his celebration. Assist by Firmino. Surely Arsenal will start committing now? Xhaka gets a yellow card for a foul in the build up to the goal. Arsenal have had a few shoots on goal but nothing solid, no big efforts, Lacazette should be sent on at halftime. Liverpool are just seeing out the half now. Surely Alexis is going to look back at this half and want to leave? This Arsenal side needs reinforcements and it doesn’t look like there are any on the way. Xhaka fouls Can, he’s walking a tightrope now since he’s already been booked. At halftime, it’s all Liverpool, Arsenal need their French strikers to come off the bench and score if the one’s on the pitch can’t do it. Aaron Ramsey comes off for Francis Coquelin. Looks like Arsenal have gone to a back 4, they need to get a couple of goals in the next 45. Karius has yet another moment with the ball at his feet, amusing considering the camera pans directly to Mignolet sitting in the stands with his suit on. Teasing free kick by Salah comes off Can, but the refs give a corner, interesting considering there was no Arsenal player near that ball. Surely it is game over now, Salah makes a terrific run down the pitch and puts it past Cech. Nothing the former Chelsea man can do in that situation. Liverpool have been fantastic today, doesn’t look like they played midweek, Arsenal in fact look tired. It looks like Alexis and the Ox are making way for Giroud and Lacazette. Could this be the last time we see Alexis in an Arsenal jersey? Could this be the last time we see the Ox in an Arsenal jersey? Both have been linked with a move away. Arsenal Fan TV is gonna be absolute fire tonight. 66 minutes in and Arsenal have no shots on target. Fantastic run by Mane, comes inches from scoring his second of the game only to be cleared of the line. Moreno looks like he’s hurt, Coquelin came in late on him. If this is a serious injury it would be really unfortunate for the Spaniard considering he has had a fantastic start to the season. He is walking on his own now as the physios escort him off, he looks to be ok now. Holding goes in late on Henderson, conceding a free kick and earning himself a yellow in the process. Sturridge is being sent on for Mane who has earned the rest, been fantastic tonight. And we have 4, Sturridge heads it in far post, Salah with the assist, Man of the match for sure? Some Arsenal fans are heading out now, they’ve seen enough. Firmino goes off for James Milner. Alexis on the bench looks really depressed and like he doesn’t want to be there. Arsenal haven’t been this awful since United put 8 past them about 5 or 6 years ago. Things need to change. This is a world cup year and players like Ozil need to do better to show they deserve to be on the flight to Russia. Can goes off for Grujic, fantastic display by the German who will be competing for a world cup call up against Ozil. Wenger will be hoping that their fortunes change and they go on a long unbeaten run after this, don’t forget, last season they lost on opening day to Liverpool and didn’t get beaten again for a long time. Full time, 4-0. Arsenal’s players look dejected.

I hate to agree with the likes of DT, Troopz and the others on Arsenal Fan TV but the for the sake of one of the biggest football clubs in England, I hope Wenger leaves. They have 2 weeks to fix things but there isn’t enough time left in the window to bring talent in to fix their issues. Liverpool on the other hand did a great job, their next test against City will show us just how good they are, if they can do a job defensively or if Arsenal were just not good enough. With 3 points in 3 games, Arsenal go into the international break sitting 6 points off 1st place and they find themselves in 16th, obviously a position they will not be in for long. Cech has done a good job in goal to ensure it was just 4-0. Klopp will be happy that selecting Karius wasn’t the worst decision as he manages a clean sheet.

Man of The Match

Mo Salah had a fantastic outing, Goal and an assist, other players that deserved a shout were Mane, Firmino and Can.

Next up

Arsenal are home to Bournemouth while Liverpool face a trip to Manchester to face City.

Tottenham Hotspurs vs Burnley (Watched in bits by NAFB)

Tottenham Hotspurs 1 – 1 Burnley

Harry Kane starts for Spurs, looking to break his August taboo while Vokes leads the line for Burnley. Son makes his first start of the season for Spurs after making 2 appearances off the bench this season. New signings on the bench for both sides, Chris Wood for Burnley and Sanchez for Spurs.

Not much to report early in the game, both teams have had soft chances, a couple of long throws into the Spurs box. Son makes a run into the box but he’s offside. Still nothing significant from London, 0-0. Harry Kane has a chance right on the edge of the 6 yard box, a look at a calendar should tell you what happens next, yup, it’s August, he missed it. Spurs want a free kick on the edge of the box for a hand ball but the ref is not interested. 0-0 at Halftime, Spurs need a goal, Burnley should be happy with their performance. There it is, Alli gets a goal from a corner that ping pongs around the box. Harry Kane has another shot at goal that goes wide. He really needs this month to end so he can get back to his scoring ways. Son makes way for Sissoko for Spurs. Kane has yet another shot on goal that is saved by Tom Heaton. Oh when will it end? Harry Kane has yet another shot that is saved. Lloris makes a last ditch tackle to try and ensure they keep a clean sheet, successfully but that was close.

Spurs go into the international break hoping that Harry Kane can find his mojo again, 4 points from 3 games the start shows just how heavily they rely on Harry Kane, they need some back up for him. Oh no, Wembley is just not the place Spurs want to be, Burnley have the equalizer through new signing Chris Wood who gets a debut goal. Spurs switched off and Burnley made them pay. Full time and it is 1-1, Spurs have yet to win at Wembley.

Man of The Match

Alli’s goal was the difference and while Harry Kane is struggling, Alli stepping up is massive for the white half of North London.

Next up

Spurs visit Everton while Burnley host Crystal Palace in a fixture they are expected to cruise through.

Premier League Weekend 3 Preview (Top 7 Teams Only)

Bournemouth vs Manchester City 26th August

City roll into their game versus Bournemouth as the firm favorites. City will probably use their new signing Mendy for the first time as Kyle Walker is suspended, City will also be without Gundogan who is out injured. Bournemouth is without Francis, Stanislas and Callum Wilson. This should be a simple outing for the Blue half of Manchester and expect them to walk away with 3 points.

Manchester United vs Leicester City 26th August

United will look to carry their blinding form into their third game of the season versus Leicester. Although this game could be a lot harder than previous ties versus West Ham and Swansea City. Expect goals in this game. We could see United concede their first goal of the season and I honestly think it could happen. United are still without Ashley Young, Luke Shaw and Marcos Rojo. New (?) signing Zlatan Ibrahimović is still out inured and will not be back for at least 2 more months. Robert Huth and Iborra look like they will miss out for Leicester City. Should be a win for Manchester United but not as simple as previous weeks.

Chelsea vs Everton 27th August

Chelsea face an Everton side that have looked good so far this season, Wayne Rooney looks reborn and will look to score in his 3rd consecutive game. Chelsea have just Eden Hazard out injured while Everton have Gueye, Klassen and Ramirez out injured. Ross Barkley isn’t fit yet either. Chelsea head into this game having got an impressive record after home defeats, they last lost two back to back home games in November 2011. They have yet to win a home game this season but expect them to open that account this weekend. Gary Cahill is still suspended for the Blues while Fabregas could make his return after suspension. Everton have lost just 1 game out of 11 EPL games (W6 D4) against the team that won the league in the previous season.

Liverpool vs Arsenal 27th August

Liverpool host Arsenal on Super Sunday in a crucial tie for both teams. Liverpool have Can and Alexander-Arnold back from injury while want away Coutinho is still out injured. Arsenal have Alexis back but does he want to still play for the gunners? Koscienly is back from suspension and that will help a shaky Arsenal defense. Liverpool haven’t won 3 EPL games against Arsenal since May 1998 and will be looking to get a 3rd straight win. Historically this tie has produced the most goals past the 90th minute in EPL history with 17. Liverpool will also want to keep a clean sheet as they haven’t had 4 straight at home since September 2013. Should be a high scoring affair as that seems to be the Liverpool mentality at the moment, both teams are struggling with defensive issues and I think it could be a goal draw.

Tottenham vs Burnley 27th August

Spurs are still without Danny Rose and Erik Lamela while Burnley will be without striker Jon Walters. Spurs go into this fixture on the back of a tough UCL draw where they were placed into the group of death. They know that they need to do well in the league and they will be looking to win a game at the New Wembley. Last time Burnley visited London they got 3 points off defending champions Chelsea and they would like to get another point or even 3 on their visit to the biggest stadium in England. I honestly think that Spurs might get away with this one and get a win.

Weekend Recap 19th August 2017

Swansea City vs Manchester United (Game watched by NAFB)

Swansea 0 – 4 Manchester United

united swansea 4 0.jpeg

Swansea started with 5 at the back while the Red Devils named an unchanged starting 11. The only notable change for United was the presence of Victor Lindelöf on the bench. The game started with United dominating the game, however the Red Devils broke the deadlock at the stroke of halftime. Pogba had a header from the corner which bounced back off the crossbar, Eric Baily was there to mop up and score his first goal as a Manchester United player. Midway through the second half, Swansea took of a defender and tried to go for it, while Jose sent on Martial and Fellaini. Game Changer. This substitution lead to 3 Manchester United goals in the space of less than 4 minutes. Lukaku, Pogba and Martial all got on the score sheet for a second consecutive week. Another 2 assists for Mkhitaryan. Wow. United hit that gear I talked about in my last few posts that concerned them. Those 4 minutes of football were deadly, they punished Swansea and there was nothing they could do to change it.

Fun Fact

Manchester United have scored 4 goals or more in their first two games of the season for the first time since 1907/08

Man of the Match

Like last week, I am going to give this to Mkhitaryan again. Fantastic outing for the little Armenian and his two assists were solid.

Next Up

Manchester United host Leicester City (26th August) who have looked good this season, at the time of writing they are leading 1-0 against Brighton and Hove Albion. Swansea will face a trip to Crystal Palace (26th August) who are currently tied at 0-0 at Anfield, although that result will probably not stay the same.

Southampton vs West Ham

Southampton 3 – 2 West Ham

I wasn’t going to talk about this game, I was going to stick to just the teams I predicted in the top 7 but certain events prompted me to talk about the fixture.

Southampton opened the scoring through Gabbiadini in just the 11th minute of the game (it took them 30 shots on goal through the season to finally open the scoring). The incident in question then came in during the 33rd minute where Marko Arnautovic had a moment of madness. He seemingly threw his elbow at the head of the Southampton player and got himself a red card. This is unacceptable and The FA needs to hand down more than the standard 3 game ban that is handed out for these direct red cards. A few minutes later, Dusan Tadic scored from the penalty spot and doubled their lead, the goal was followed by a goal for The Hammers who finally opened their account with a typical poacher’s goal from the little pea, yes, Javier Hernandez has a Premier League goal after spells away in Germany. Unbelievable scenes, Javier Hernandez has his second of the game and now it is 2-2, down 2-0, 10 men and now they have pulled level. Liverpool most certainly did a much better job after the introduction of Salah in the 61st minute, he is a gamechanger. Really unfortunate for the Hammers as they conceded a late penalty and allowed Southampton to get the win with a late penalty, converted by Charlie Austin. Zabaleta, a veteran in the EPL should know better than give away a late penalty like that. Joe Hart has now conceded 7 goals in 2 games at West Ham.

Man of the Match

2 goals for Javier Hernandez means he gets the man of the match, unfortunate to end up on the losing side.

Next Up

Southampton are away to Huddersfield while the Hammers visit Newcastle United.

Liverpool vs Crystal Palace (Game watched by NAFB)

Liverpool 1 – 0 Crystal Palace

Liverpool made 5 changes from the side that beat Hoffenheim in midweek for this clash versus Crystal Palace who were looking to extend their win streak at Anfield. The game in the first half was a back and forth affair with nothing significant happening. They are missing players of quality such as Salah and it shows in the performance. Liverpool really should be cruising if they have their starting 11 out, but it looks like getting into the champions league is currently priority number 1. 72 minutes into the game, Mane got the opening goal after a bad bit of defending by Crystal Palace. Game ended at 1-0 with nothing notable happening again.

Man of the Match

Mane did a good job, he is one of the most important players for Liverpool and it showed.

Next Up

Liverpool host Arsenal next time out (27th August), while concerns about players on both sides and their transfers remain. Coutinho’s transfer could hinge on Liverpool’s midweek clash and their progression in the Champions League. While Alexis still wants a transfer out of North London.

While Palace are home to a Swansea team that has yet to score a goal this season and they have allowed 44 shots at their goal in 2 games.

Stoke City vs Arsenal (Watched by NAFB)

Stoke City 1 – 0 Arsenal

Stoke gave a debut to Jese Rodriguez up top while Ozil, Welbeck and Lacazette lead the line for the Gunners. The hybrid 5 at the back for Arsenal features 3 full backs, a winger and Mustafi, the only recognized center back in the line-up. Interesting to note that Hector Bellerin has started at left wing back while the Ox at right wing back.

Stoke have looked strong, most of their bite coming from new signing Jese who has been fantastic. His fellow Champions League winner, Shaqiri, limps off with an injury. In the second half Jese scored his first goal in the Premier League. He was fantastic all night. Stoke 1, Arsenal 0. Déjà vu. Late on, the Potters had some good build up play and Pieters had a run-on goal from the left flank. Thankfully for Arsenal, he made a crunching tackle on the Stoke wing back who was hit hard on the follow through, this was a very 50-50 tackle and I personally think that a different referee would have taken very different action based on that tackle. He could have seen at least a yellow card for the tackle. Arsenal went into the 5 minutes of stoppage time a goal down. The home crowd is now singing their version of when the ‘saints go marching in’. Stoke really are Wenger’s kryptonite. Another loss at Stoke, they only have 1 win in their last 8 games at Stoke. Cue Arsenal Fan TV. Cue Wenger out. Cue more rumors regarding Alexis leaving.

Man of the Match

Jese had a fantastic first game in the EPL, remember the name.

Next up

Arsenal visit Liverpool next time out (27th August), while concerns about players on both sides and their transfers remain. Coutinho’s transfer could hinge on Liverpool’s midweek clash and their progression in the Champions League. While Alexis still wants a transfer out of North London. While Stoke visit West Brom (27th August).

The Drama

The day saw 2 direct red cards issued (before STK v ARS), one to Marko Arnautovic and one to Hal Robinson-Kanu. Both instances involved the striker throwing his elbow into a defensive player’s face. While the EPL does not have as many protocols as the leagues across the pond in North America do, The FA needs to review these incidents and hand out longer suspensions as targeting the head should not be allowed and examples need to be made.

Premier League 12th August 2017 round up

Liverpool vs Watford (Game Watched by Not Another Football Blog)

Liverpool 3 – 3 Watford

Liverpool’s big name signing in Salah got his first EPL start while Marco Silva only named 1 of the 7 new Watford players in his starting lineup.

The pregame was all about Mo Salah, lots of quotes about how he played as the Kop on the PlayStation, interesting considering he once turned down Liverpool for Chelsea.

Halftime and Liverpool look sloppy. Down 2-1 to Watford who have been fantastic, Marco Silva one of the most underrated managers?

Mane scored his first of hopefully many for the season, Tom Cleverly for Watford having a fantastic game. The former Manchester United man made a great run to set up the second goal.

Salah needs to finish his chances.

Well, the second half was just that, Liverpool’s pace showed, Liverpool won a penalty, Firminio calmly put away and the team going up 3-2 with the comeback being on. HOWEVER, fast forward to stoppage time, and we had it, the equalizer. Watford stole a point. A well-deserved point. THE EPL IS BACK BABY! Back and forth eh?

Watford deserved the point, played really well considering they are one of the favorites to go down, Liverpool have to look at this as 2 massive points dropped, Moreno had a solid game from left back and it looks like Klopp has finally figured out what was happening with him last season.

Man Of The Match

Firminio had a goal and did a fantastic job setting up Salah for his goal, certainly a man of the match performance.

Next Up

Liverpool are playing Crystal Palace at home, a game they should comfortably win, while Watford are away to Bournemouth, a game that is going to be an interesting match considering the two clubs will look to get as many points early in the season as they can.

Chelsea vs Burnley (Game Watched by NAFB)

Chelsea 2 – 3 Burnley

The biggest surprise in this game was with the lineup Antonio Conte put out, no Morata. The only Chelsea signing to start was Rudiger.

A back and forth start to the game till the 13th minute when Gary Cahill had a moment of madness. Chelsea, a team with a squad depleted, have just lost their captain in the first game of the season. Madness. Chelsea seem to have lost their minds, Fabregas picking up a yellow for mocking the referee. Conte, not wanting to take any risks makes an early substitute, bringing on Christensen for Boga.

Chelsea were rocked by the Gary Cahill red card and it finally hit them in the 24th minute, Sam Vokes with the opener to put Burnley ahead. Chelsea are really struggling here, they have about 35% possession since Cahill’s red card. Burnley are clearly the better team. This feels like Leicester last season when the defending champions lost their first game of the season. Sam Vokes has another! He has put Burnley 3-0 up!! WOW. Chelsea are losing their heads here; David Luiz is coming together with Burnley players now.

At half time, Chelsea have been poor, David Luiz needs to calm down or he may be taking an early shower as well.

luiz sideshow bob

We have the debut we have all been waiting for, Morata is coming on. Chelsea look full of life again and had a penalty shout for a tackle on Rudiger, not much in it but Rudiger is limping, not sure if they can afford to have another defender out. David Luiz has probably been in the refs ears 15 times tonight, shocked that he hasn’t been booked, Chelsea look like they are close to getting their first of the season though.

Morata has a debut goal! 69th minute, a beautiful ball in by Willian and Morata with a fantastic diving header, game on? Christensen has the ball in the back of the net but he’s offside, still 3-1 with 17 or so to go. Azpilicueta has a moment where he grapples with a Burnley player. Oh no, Fabregas gets his second yellow and he is off. Luiz scores the 2nd for Chelsea and Morata gets an assist. He’s had a goal and assist in his 30 or so minutes of game time for Chelsea.

Conte miracles.PNG

Chelsea had a rough start to the league and need to do better going forward, starting with their players keeping cooler heads. Hats off to Burnley.

Man of the Match

Sam Vokes deserves this award, scored two goals at the Bridge and had a great run out, showed the worst of David Luiz as he was under his skin all evening.

Next Up

Chelsea are going up against Spurs at Wembley on the 20th of August, they had better hope for a better run out then as Spurs will not be kind and come out guns blazing. Chelsea will be missing Cahill and Fabregas through suspension. Burnley will face West Brom at home, riding high on their performance versus Chelsea.

Everton vs Stoke

Everton 1 – 0 Stoke

He’s back, Wayne Rooney has come back home and is in the lineup for their first game of the season. Micheal Keane makes his first start for Everton and is going to be a big player for them this season. 5 of Everton’s new signings made their debut in this game for Everton.

Wayne Rooney, top goal scorer for England, top goal scorer for Manchester United, and now he has scored on his return to Everton. The Toffees are going to be very happy with this, a solid 1-0 win at home to start the season.

Man of the Match

Wayne Rooney had a fantastic outing, no question about it, he will love the fact that he scored at his first game back. He now has 300 Goals and Assists in the Premier League throughout his career.

rooney everton old and new.PNG

Next Up

Everton don’t play again till the 22nd of August in a massive game away to Manchester City, going to be a tough game for them away from home, while Stoke have Arsenal visiting them on the 20th of August, a game that will be tricky for them.

Crystal Palace vs Huddersfield Town

Palace 0 – 3 Huddersfield Town

Zaha, Benteke and Loftus-Cheek started up front for Crystal Palace while Huddersfield got their first taste of the Premier League.

Huddersfield playing their first top flight game got the go-ahead goal in the 24th minute, it was in fact an own goal by Joel Ward. OH MY GOD they have one more!! Huddersfield have 2! And this time it’s one of their own, Steve Mounie got the second. Frank de Boer is not going to be happy, this is not how he wanted his first game in charge to go! Mounie gets a second and that’s game, 3-0 Huddersfield. They will be very pleased with this result, their first win in the Premier League.

Man of the Match

Steve Mounie had 2 goals on the day and secured the three points. Great game all around by everyone on the terriers.

Next Up

Palace are away to Liverpool on the 19th of August, they will want to put on a show like Watford and try and get points, Huddersfield are home to fellow newly promoted side Newcastle United on the 20th of August.

Southampton vs Swansea

Southampton 0 – 0 Swansea

The Saints were without their main man, Virgil van Dijk as he’s out injured and dealing with speculation regarding his future and potential transfer to Liverpool.

Not much happened in the first half, a yellow card for Redmond and Romeu of Southampton. The second half was slow as well, final score a 0-0 draw. Southampton had 29 shots on goal in the game, just 2 of which were on target. That is something that needs to change going forward or they will struggle. Not a lot of teams will allow them to take 29 shots.

Man of the Match

Fabianski faced 29 shots, only 2 of which were on target and walked away with a clean sheet.

Next Up

Southampton play West Ham at home on the 19th of August, they will be looking to get at least a point from that game. Swansea will host Manchester United, that game will be a tough game for the Swans.

West Brom vs Bournemouth

West Brom 1 – 0 Bournemouth

No surprises with the line ups here, Joshua King starts up front for Bournemouth, the third highest goal scorer in the year 2017 in the Premier League, only behind Lukaku and Harry Kane. Can he keep his form going?

West Brom got the early lead, their new signing, Hegazi, scored from a set piece in the 31st minute. Tony Pulis will be happy about that.

Man of the Match

Hegazi is the man of the match, got a goal in the EPL debut from defense and kept the clean sheet.

Next Up

West Brom play Burnley away, they will be coming in after a solid performance at Chelsea, who will be without Gary Cahill after his red card. Bournemouth play Watford at home, another team that will be looking to carry their good form from the game against Liverpool.

Brighton and Hove Albion vs Manchester City

Brighton 0 – 2 Manchester City

Other than Danillo playing at left wing back in a 3-5-2 for City, neither line up included any surprises. The Citizens rolled into Brighton hoping for a win, a big win.

The first half didn’t produce any goals for us viewers, with Jesus picking up the only Yellow card of the half. There was a long stoppage in play as Isaiah Brown went down injured and received some treatment. City were most certainly getting nervous by the 65th minute considering they hadn’t scored yet, Pep sent Leroy Sane on for Danillo, an attacking switch. The move paid off as City got their first goal of the campaign through Aguero, and shortly after they got a second through an unfortunate own goal by Lewis Dunk. New boys Bernado Silva, Kyle Walker, Danillo and Ederson all featured in the match up and it was a decent run out, although people expected a more one sided game.

Man of the Match

I don’t think Aguero did enough in a game where City had a whooping 78.1% possession, they got of 14 shots and only converted 2. Therefore I am going to say that right wing back Kyle Walker was my man of the match, he put in a solid shift in both attacking and defensive thirds of the pitch.

Next Up

City don’t play again till the 22nd of August when they host Everton, should be a tricky game but I think City might sneak out of the game with a win. Brighton have the daunting task of playing at Leicester who will be looking to get their first win after an unfortunate draw against Arsenal.

He’s staying he’s leaving he’s staying he’s leaving

Coutinho has ‘officially’ handed in his transfer request. I said officially in quotes because there’s been no official announcement from the Kop saying he’s leaving or that he’s sent in a request

What we do know is that The Fenway group, the owners, released a statement saying that Coutinho WILL be a Liverpool player come the end of this season.

Philippe Coutinho not leaving statement.PNG

Liverpool obviously cannot let Coutinho leave, however, if he puts in a request he must be allowed to leave. Liverpool have already had issues with transfers this window when they were accused of tapping up Southampton captain, Virgil van Dijk. Probably the main reason they haven’t got him yet.

I feel like football players and clubs alike have lost their respect for transfers and player contracts. We have the following clubs and their fan bases moaning about players being tapped up and forced to leave

  1. Barcelona

Barca famously sign players without consulting the club, they went and got Suarez and Neymar, the latter being the second shadiest transfer of all time. Currently they have been trying to get Coutinho to force his way out of Liverpool before their first game of The new season.

  1. PSG

PSG have also used a few ‘interesting’ tactics, the La Liga, like the rest of the world, would like to know how they funded the 220 million they had Neymar pay Barcelona to get his contract released.

  1. Liverpool

Yes, the club that has been tapped up by Barcelona is notorious for tapping up players themselves, just ask any Southampton fan. This window they have been threatened with a ban and are trying to still sign Southampton captain Virgil van dijk.

  1. Real Madrid

Madrid have previously been given a transfer ban (that was reduced) due to sketchy dealings with underage players and their signings

  1. Atletico Madrid

Los Rojiblancos are in the middle of serving a transfer ban due to the same reason as real Madrid and are one of the sketchier clubs bringing players in.

It really is upsetting to see players forcing their way out and the value of contracts need to be appreciated. To counter that, we can’t have clubs forcing players out either but they do try to give players an option as to where they are going.

If Coutinho does leave, Liverpool need the distraction of the transfer to end as soon as possible because they cannot let it impact their next few games. They also need to use this money smartly and sign up a few or some big-name players to help them. Liverpool need to hang onto their man or they will not get their club into the Champions League next season or even push for the title this year.
